Recipient Org: Description | Sense was established over 69 years ago in 1955. Founded by two mothers - Peggy Freeman and Margaret Brock, who contracted rubella while pregnant and their children are born deafblind. In 2025, we celebrate our 70th birthday. Sense is a national disability charity that supports children and adults with complex communication needs to be understood, connected and valued in society. Our expertise is a ‘total communication’ approach using all the senses to overcome barriers in communication. We aim to achieve this through the following 3 key aims: o To increase awareness of Sense and the individuals and families we support. o To support more individuals and families by expanding our income. o To increase the opportunities for individuals and families to take part in new activities and to support each other. We support people to maintain and increase their independence and ensure that individuals and families are fully involved, can participate fully and are central to our work. We aim to enable positive outcomes for individuals and families including enhancing their well-being, building strong relationships, staying healthy, accessing new activities and being part of their community. Let me tell you about ten-year-old twins Ernie and Ted and their parents. Ernie has deafblindness caused by Downs Syndrome which affects his sight and hearing as well as his muscular development that impacts his speech and made it difficult for Ernie to communicate. Meanwhile his twin - Ted, could chat with anyone. Ernie was left frustrated at not being able to talk, but after finding Sense, Ernie engaged in outdoor activities that helped his muscles develop and confidence grow, which led to him say his first word - “Ted” By 2026 our goal is to support 50,000 more disabled people to communicate, experience the world and fulfil their potential. In order to achieve this, we need your support to enable us to expand our reach and provide support to more children, young people, adults and families. In terms of the best thing achieved in the last year, we increased our reach to 32,000 people which is 2,000 more than in 2022-2023, meaning we are giving the people we support the best possible start to life. Two further milestones of note include the opening a new Sense Hub in Denbigh (North Wales) and we're ready to open a new Sense Hub in Belfast in April 2025. We have a very strong presence across the South West region and in particular the Somerset counties, supporting 22 children and their families through our children's services. The team from our local hub based in Kingswood Bristol support directly from the hub and out in the local community. |
