Recipient Org: Description The Centre for Ecotherapy empowers isolated and vulnerable residents of Moulsecoomb and Brighton and Hove by using ecotherapy and structured therapeutic horticulture to help establish sense of self worth, personal skills and social confidence. Our outputs make huge impacts on participants' lives, enabling reintegration into their local community and potential re-employment. Facilitated sessions feature collaborative working where participants self-identify tasks alongside experienced horticulturalists, learn skills, try new tasks, gain confidence in a working environment and establish a connection to the local natural environment. Sessions are designed to enable vulnerable people to experience group dynamics, feel valuable and develop personal resilience in a supported working environment. We aim to move people from exclusion and social anxiety to inclusion and participation where they feel confident to engage and take a role in decision making, rediscovering and rebuilding their ability to contribute to community life. Our services: twice weekly drop–in sessions that bring vulnerable adults together to tend an allotment and ‘wilderness’ area; weekly young person’s ecotherapy session. Sessions bring together experienced horticulturalists, participants and volunteers from different walks of life who share their individual experience, passion and skills. Discussions around daily living, environmental awareness, plant growing techniques, national and international social issues, and experience of mental health issues arise naturally amongst group members invoking a sense of community sharing and participation. Working together, participants grow vegetables (which they harvest to prepare a shared lunch, creating a healthy lived experience and promoting wellbeing practices) or help construct site facilities. Our group activities facilitate peer support and valuing of individual’s lived experiences which fosters inclusion and reduces feelings of isolation. ‘I feel happy here, I feel relaxed here, it’s a lovely atmosphere ... people listen and its nice being with people in the same situation as yourself and you don’t feel so alone.’
