Recipient Org: Description Reaching Families was established in 2008 by parent-carers to “...empower, inform and care for parents and families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in West Sussex.” We achieve our mission through the delivery of highly quality information (parent guides and factsheets), training and peer support (via parent support groups and social media). Our key projects and services include: - Making Sense Of It All: this parent-carer guide covers a range of subjects designed to inform parents of children aged 0-14. Subject matter includes handling diagnosis, applying for benefits, how to access services in Education, Health & Social Care, local leisure opportunities, etc. Making Sense of Adult Life: this parent-carer guide is designed to meet the needs of families aged 14-25. The book covers a range of subjects including further education, volunteering, training and work, adolescence and emotional wellbeing, housing & independent living, moving into adult health & social care, etc. Factsheets: we have published a series of 37 factsheets that provide both clinical and relevant local information to parents across a range of subjects including major childhood disabilities, and a miscellaneous range of other issues. Training Roadshow: we currently deliver 24 workshops per annum at various venues and locations across West Sussex. Workshops include understanding anxiety in children, applying for benefits, understanding challenging behaviour, understanding sensory issues, handling stress & building resilience, support at school, helping your child achieve better sleep, etc. Umbrellas Support Group: we run 3 monthly support groups for parent-carers in Billingshurst, Littlehampton and Worthing. The groups help connect parents and share information via resources and guest speakers. Facebook: our online support group has a membership of over 1,900 parents. It is an excellent means of connecting parents, promoting our projects and services and sharing news, information and resources.
