| Recipient Org: Description | Safe and Sound Homes prevents youth homelessness. A registered charity we work across York, North and East Yorkshire supporting young people aged 16 to 25 facing homelessness. We work with young people at a time of urgent need and for the longer term to ensure that a crisis does not lead to a cycle of homelessness, unemployment and benefit dependence. Our aim is that the young people we work with never have to face homelessness again. SASH helps young people escape homelessness – for good. The threat of homelessness can never be totally removed due to the multiplicity of factors that cause it, but our three projects reduce youth homelessness. By stepping in early to support the homeless young people of today we prevent them becoming the homeless people of tomorrow with more entrenched issues. We have three projects in East Riding: 1. Prevention: providing support and advice to young people to resolve housing issues; access stable accommodation with secure tenancy and to manage their tenancy • Tenancy advice – young people have poor awareness of their housing rights • Advocacy • Signposting • Access grants for bond payments • Independent living skills including money management via group sessions and one to one advice • Three months focused floating support 2. Nightstop: supportive, welcoming emergency accommodation in a volunteer host’s home for young people for young people who have no- where safe to stay that night. Young people can stay for up to 14 nights while multiple agencies work to provide long term stable accommodation. 3. Supported Lodgings provides safe long-term accommodation with a volunteer host for young people who do not have the skills to live and thrive independently necessary skills. Volunteer hosts help them manage their lives and develop into adults knowing how to manage their own home. At the same time SASH staff work with the young people to enable them to return to education or work; build new friendships; their self-esteem and confidence and improve their mental health. SASH has a close working relationship with teams across the area to provide advice, emergency and longer term support for young people at risk of homelessness. |
