Recipient Org: Charity Number 1184036
Recipient Org: Description Nidderdale & Pateley Bridge Men’s Shed C.I.O. [“Pateley Shed”] is a registered charity (No: 1184036) working for the public benefit by: 1) addressing rural isolation and social exclusion 2) improving the mental health and well-being of men in the Nidderdale area of North Yorkshire who attend our activities. Men’s Sheds are essentially work-shops where men go to make and repair things while at the same time make new friendships and develop support groups with like-minded people. Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and rarely share personal concerns and worries. A key driver of our charity is providing a renewed sense of purpose and belonging among men who are retired, unemployed, experiencing redundancy or health problems or who for some other reason are not currently employed. Pateley Shed is about social connections and providing a “listening ear”. As such our workshop facilities and the friendships built through our activities will provide a route to better health that is compliant with the “Five Ways to Well Being” programme i.e., Connect; Learn; Be Active; Take Notice and Give, currently being promoted by Public Heath England, the NHS and several Mental Health charities and organisations. After two years of searching for the ideal venue we recently signed a three-year lease with North Yorkshire County Council for use of the former Youth Centre behind St Cuthbert’s C of E primary school in Pateley Bridge. During those two years as well as establishing the charity the Steering Group has completed small projects for the likes of Nidderdale Plus, Dacre & Hartwith Village Hall and during 2020 as lockdown rules allowed we worked with the owner of Fish Pond Woods Bewerley on several activities to help with woodland management. Now we have a venue “Pateley Shed” will provide the management, equipment, and tools for projects where primarily men can socialise and work, either individually or in teams, to make and or repair products and artifacts in a range of materials. We are currently converting a Pre-school nursery room of the former Youth Centre into a multi-purpose workshop. This requires additional electrical work, provision of work benches, power tools and various materials and also as part of our lease, we have to repair and repaint much of the external parts of the building itself – all this will provide short term projects for those that join us. We recently started a promotion campaign which has featured a front-page article in the Nidderdale Herald and also a video of our activities on Harrogate’s “Stray Ferret” news channel website which hopefully will attract more members. (See Pateley Shed on You Tube). As we grow we plan to become involved in community projects such as building things for community groups and individuals in need, possibly helping to maintain green spaces and even restoring and maintaining village features etc. Going forward we expect our key beneficiaries will be, given the evidence nationally, predominantly men between the ages of 60 – 84. Within Nidderdale 49% of residents are male and if the “Pateley Shed” attracted 5% of men between the age of 60 – 84 we could have a group of 40 members according to the 2011 Census data. However, we have a strong following of women on our Face Book page and so we could offer joint and/or women only sessions as well if this translates into demand for such a service. Other opportunities over the next three years could be working closer with the schools in Pateley Bridge and increasing the number of daytime sessions as demand warrants plus offering evening classes to those who cannot attend during the daytime. We are affiliated with the UK Men’s Shed Association who provide guidance, promotional resources, and a national forum for Sheds to support each other. Up to now we have worked with and been supported by the Nidderdale Plus Community Hub, with help and a grant from the NYCC Stronger Communities team and have been successful in attracting additional funding from several local sources.
