Glasgow Biomedical Research Centre. (360G-Wellcome-057275_Z_99_Z)

£8,100,000

A new Centre for Biomedical Research, based in a well-resourced new building, is proposed. The prime function of the Centre will be to provide the crucial collaborative environment necessary to advance the understanding of molecular processes in disease and immunity and to link basic and clinical scientists in the quest for new therapeutic strategies. To achieve this, it is proposed that several of the University's leading research groups, ranging from structural biology through microbiology, parasitology and immunology to clinical medicine, are accommodated in a building designed specifically to enhance multidisciplinary research and the flow of ideas, on a solid technological platform. The groups are presently housed in 5 different buildings which are scattered across the campus and the city. By bringing these groups together from 3 faculties, many would be exposed to disciplines they would not encounter otherwise, creating the conditions for considerable added value, such as the development of novel medical treatments and the application of basic approaches to understanding disease transmission and control. There are a number of strong clinical research groups with a direct and growing interest in immunology who are located remotely from the basic immunologists. The proposed Centre not only would solve these problems, but also would create synergy amongst the various groups, giving added value and setting the scene for application of basic research to more applied areas.
