Urban community randomized trial for STD prevention: DSMB evaluation & recommendation regarding continuation. Phase 1: Jan - Mar 2006 (360G-Wellcome-078835_Z_05_Z)
The ongoing Wellcome Trust-Supported Urban Community Randomized Trial of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Prevention in Peru is nearing the end of its second year. Twenty midsize cities have been randomized to a hybrid intervention, consisting of strengthened STI syndromic management delivered through a large pharmacy/clinician network; and bimonthly work-venue outreach to female sex workers (FSW) by a mobile team providing counselling, condoms and STI screening and treatment. Social marketing of condoms for STI/HIV prevention and of STD treatment packets. The impact of the intervention on STI prevalences in random samples will be determined through surveys of young adults and FSW at the end of 2005. We propose to:1. Convene a Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) in early 2006 to review survey results and recommend whether the trial should be stopped for efficacy, stopped for futility, or continued if there is a trend toward a positive effect in the FSW or the general population that does not meet criteria for stopping. Contingent on DSMB recommendations, we would then:2. Continue the trial for a third year; and3. Repeat outcome measures in the young adults and in FSW at the end of the third year.
