Negotiating Competing Agendas: Collaborations Between International Health Organizations and Their National Counterparts in the Fight Against Cancer, 1925-1975. (360G-Wellcome-083317_Z_07_Z)
My research will focus on understanding the interactions of national and international health organizations dedicated to fighting cancer, with an emphasis on the competing research agendas of British, American and global health associations. The project will be divided into three sections, with the first analyzing national opposition to the founding of international health collaboratives. The second portion will examine the ways in which the often competing agendas of national and international health organizations were negotiated, while the third will look at the strategies used by international health organizations to propagate their visions concerning the prioritization of certain research projects. The dissertation will contribute to filling in a gap in research on the history of cancer by using international politics and the literature surrounding international health organizations to contextualize single-country studies of the work of clinical oncologists and laboratory researchers. The project will also aim to shed light on the changing place of chronic diseases in the global health agenda.
