Heathen Sufferings: The Church Missionary Society and mental ill-health at Mengo Hospital, Uganda, 1897-1944 (360G-Wellcome-089707_Z_09_Z)
I will explore constructions of mental ill-health at the Church Missionary Society (CMS) Mengo Hospital, Uganda, 1897-1944, in order to redress a historiographical bias towards discourses of colonial governance in colonial psychiatry. By introducing a medical mission as a distinct context for psychiatric discourses, my research will develop a new framework in which psychiatric practices can be examined.
