Crossing the boundaries of mind and medicine: Carl du Prel (1839-1899) and his network in the history of dynamic psychiatry (360G-Wellcome-089723_Z_09_Z)
The proposed research aims to a) detail du Prel's philosophical-psychological system in the context of emerging mechanistic, monistic, and other theories of mind and body, especially pertaining to issues related to the mental causation of physical and mental health, b) reconstruct the genesis of knowledge claims of opponents of late nineteenth- to early twentieth century psychical research, who held that certain unpopular beliefs and unusual experiences were inherently pathological or based on deviant cognitive functioning, c) evaluate the significance of responses to psychical research in general, and du Prel and his network in particular, for the making of psychology as a university discipline, d) assess the relationship between the theories of du Prel and those of the founder of 'subliminal psychology', Frederic Myers, whose theories informed key concepts in the psychology of the unconscious.
