Oxford Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour. (360G-Wellcome-090309_Z_09_Z)

£5,000,000

We aim to establish a centre for basic neuroscience research, consisting of an interactive and complementary group of leading neuroscientists and students, all focussed on a key problem in neurobiology: the biological mechanisms of adaptive behaviour. In order to address this goal we will develop new genetic technologies for dissecting neural circuits. We realize that the key to understanding information processing in the brain will likely be found in experimental systems that preserve core principles, yet allow a high degree of experimental control, including the capacity to probe inside and outside of normal physiological limits. Our proposed centre brings together researchers using Drosophila melanogaster, a model organism that leverages the power of genetically encoded reagents for monitoring and manipulating neuronal function, with groups pioneering analogous and complementary approaches in vertebrates.
