Wellcome Trust PhD Programme for Clinicians at the University of Cambridge: 'The impact of delirium on cognitive outcomes.' (360G-Wellcome-090661_Z_09_Z)
Delirium is a neuropsychiatric syndrome that represents a decompensation in cognitive function in response to acute illness. Long-term cognitive sequelae of delirium are not well understood. This study aims to be the most comprehensive analysis to date of the impact of delirium on dementia in the general population. Delirium can be ascertained in part through existing measures of acute cognitive change in population-based cohort studies. These will be refined by data from record-linkage (Hospital Episode Statistics), and retrospective review of hospital records. This delirium exposure measure will then be used to examine rates of cognitive change before and after delirium. In addition, if it is shown that delirium itself contributes to overall cognitive impairment, data on delirium exposure can inform current studies of dementia neuropathology in CFAS. Throughout, there will be a focus on the implications of these models for cognitive health in the general population.
