TWINS UK resource: Data and sanple harmonisation towards open access and cohort maintenance - Bridge funding (360G-Wellcome-091855_B_10_Z)
The area of genomic medicine is one of most dynamic areas of research due to advances in technology & the change in the working attitude of the community towards large-scale collaborations and data sharing. Consequently, the community faces new challenges in terms of data storage, management, accessibility, analysis, and confidentiality. We propose a transitional program (27months) which aims to maintain, improve, and increase accessibility to the TwinsUK resource - an established twin cohort of 11,000 volunteers and a key UK asset for genetic epidemiological research. This grant is in two parts. The first part, prompted by consultation with the Wellcome Trust, is to fund the transition of the resource towards open access. This involves: (1) moving the current store of 250,000 DNA, blood, urine samples for storage, bar-coding, and logging on LIMS system at UK Biobank; (2) restructuring our databases with the help of the EGA at EBI; and (3) improving our computing facilities and pro viding support for the newly formed independent data access committee. The second part of the program aims to secure funds for support staff to facilitate the processing of the increasing numbers of collaborations, carry out basic maintenance and retention of the twins resource.
