Professor Wolpert, from the University of Cambridge, aims so understand how the brain controls movement. Using a combination of theoretical, computational and experimental approaches in humans he will study how we learn real-world skills. As movement is the only way we have of interacting with the world, he considers the prime purpose of the human brain is to use sensory signals to determine future actions. Understanding the control of movement is, therefore, fundamental to understanding the b rain. Such knowledge can then be applied to the many disorders that affect voluntary movement as well as in the development of rehabilitation programs.
