Neuron 'Pod' for Centre of the Cell. (360G-Wellcome-098081_Z_12_Z)

£1,100,000

Centre of the Cell is a unique science education centre, outreach project and online resource dedicated to cell biology and biomedical science. It is the first science education centre in the world to be embedded within working biomedical research laboratories; the Blizard Institute at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in Whitechapel, East London. In light of the success of the project and the benefits Centre of the Cell brings to public engagement with science, we are applying to the Wellcome Trust for a capital grant towards the costs of a second building, Neuron 'Pod'. Neuron 'Pod' will be a free-standing building, situated in mews space adjacent to our existing 'Pod' and accessed by the same multi-coloured bridge. The external and internal evaluations of Centre of the Cell have generated extremely positive responses about the visitor experience and the key objectives are being met, but many of our visitors want to stay longer and do more. The key objectives of the Neuron 'Pod' project are therefore to: Enrich the Centre of the Cell experience with a new multi-functional space that complements the existing activities, and extends the length and scope of our programmes. Expand our activities with more live science shows, hands-on workshops and experiments, films, and exhibitions. Adapt the Centre of the Cell experience for different audiences. Increase our visitor numbers. Generate more income, making a major contribution to our long-term sustainability. The construction and internal fit-out of Neuron 'Pod' will use state-of-the-art building, sound, climate control, IT and lighting technologies to create a highly flexible and stunning space that can be rapidly converted from an interactive learning space to an evening reception venue.
