Function of novel human T cell subsets in host defence (360G-Wellcome-109965_Z_15_A)

£19,000

We are organising an international meeting on unconventional T cells (CD1-MR1: beyond MHC restricted lymphocytes). This is the major meeting for groups investigating these important components of immunity and occurs every 2 years, lasting 4 days. The aim of this proposal is to help support initiatives within this meeting to enhance diversity and inclusion. These include: Bursaries for those with caring responsibilities; disability access costs; Bursaries for those from Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs); networking events to introduce/reinforce a buddy system for mentoring during the conference; prizes including specific awards for young female scientists. The bursaries for those with young children will be used flexibly to assist with childcare either at the conference or at home. Bursaries for access costs would be specific to the individual disability, e.g. may include transport assistance or written transcripts of discussions. The bursaries for those from LMICs will encourage a broader range of attendees especially from under-represented backgrounds and would fund full attendance at the conference. An initial networking event will be used to launch the buddy system and we will follow up with a second event at the end of the conference. We will use the buddy system to pair up senior colleagues with more junior attendees, to ensure mentoring is available for all those who would benefit from it, including minorities where mentoring may be harder to access. Together we feel these initiatives will improve access, promote diversity and maximise the reach and impact of the conference.
