Josephine Baker's Rainbow Tribe (360G-Wellcome-203669_Z_16_Z)
JOSEPHINE BAKER AND THE RAINBOW TRIBE tells the story of the twelve multi-racial children adopted by superstar Josephine Baker in the 1950s. With personal and historical archive and testimony, we explore the utopian social experiment that would demonstrate how nurture could eradicate racism. Josephine raised her family during the Civil Rights era, when racial, cultural, and political lines were being redrawn – and when John Bowlby’s pioneering work on attachment theory and the child-rearing handbooks of Dr. Benjamin Spock were revolutionizing concepts of developmental and child psychology. Our film is a journey into issues of race, celebrity, motherhood and belonging.
