Economic and Social Dimensions of Health and Morbidity (360G-Wellcome-215842_Z_19_Z)

£29,885

The proposal is to build a substantive, international research agenda, delving into several, hitherto under-researched, dimensions of health outcomes through the creation and consolidation of a network of active researchers with a specific Southern focus. The proposed research agenda on economic and social determinants of health and morbidity will fill several knowledge gaps, as well as contribute specific inputs into policy and advocacy. The team is interested in developing a research agenda along the following broad themes. The research would either be cross-national or focus on a specific country; however, the issues are broad enough to have wide ranging international implications. The broad themes are: 1. Socioeconomic Status, Stigma and Health: Racial and Caste Disparities 2. Women’s Health: Son Preference, Breastfeeding and Participation in Paid Work 3. The Origins of Health Disparities: The Importance of Early Childhood 4. Intersecting Identities: Gender, Caste and Class 5. Improving Measurement and Policy: Understanding Demand and Supply of Health Services The plan is for the core researchers to participate in three closed-door workshops of 2-3 days each over 12 months. At the end of this period, we hope to be successful in building a coherent proposal for a research programme subsuming multiple linked projects.
