Promoting the usage of tranexamic acid for the management of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in Nepal (360G-Wellcome-219962_Z_19_Z)
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the most common causes of maternal deaths in Nepal. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an anti-fibrinolytic medication that works to improve blood clotting and helps prevent excessive blood loss during postpartum bleeding, heavy menstrual bleeding,or other surgeries.Though available and frequently used, there is no policy to guide TXA use in the management of PPH as per recent recommendation of the World Health Organization. To date in Nepal, TXA, although widely available and relatively inexpensive, is used erratically, generally following WHO’s outdated guidelines of 2012. The Policy Dialogue project intends to i) raise awareness within the scientific community and with policy makers in Nepal on the global evidence regarding the effect of TXA in reducing maternal deaths and to ii) encourage the inclusion of this medicine in national policy guidelines for the management of PPH. Key Goal: To reduce PPH-related deaths in Nepal through facilitating dialogue between experts and policy makers with the aim of updating the Nepalese guidelines and protocols on the treatment of PPH
