Uncovering the Role of Complement Regulation in Macular Degeneration: A Genomic and Functional Analysis Using the UK Biobank (360G-Wellcome-316863_Z_24_Z)
Our study aims to uncover genetic interactions that drive overactivation of the alternative pathway of complement in age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using statistical techniques on new genomic and retinal phenotype data from the UK Biobank, validating these using mutational studies in the National Renal and Complement Therapeutics Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. By identifying the genetic contributions and interactions of key genes to disease, we aim to determine an individual's risk of developing AMD and inform targeted therapy for the disease. This research has the potential to improve clinical trials for AMD by identifying patient subgroups who will benefit most from emerging therapies.
