Modelling the Impact of Combined Cancer Screening Programmes (360G-Wellcome-319819_Z_24_Z)

£0

Early detection of cancer is a promising strategy to reduce cancer mortality, since stage at diagnosis determines the success of treatment and survival rates. However, the low prevalence of certain cancer types requires screening many individuals to identify a single case. Combined cancer screening strategies can enhance the effectiveness and implementation of cancer screening programs. The aim of my PhD research is to develop and implement a modelling framework to evaluate the health impacts and cost-effectiveness of combined cancer screening strategies tailored to the risk profiles of specific population groups, using smokers as the starting point. The types of cancer under initial consideration are lung, kidney, bladder, oral, and pancreatic cancers (referred below as "selected cancers"). The final list to be determined following consultation with clinical experts. The specific objectives of this PhD are i) to review the accuracy and effectiveness of screening tests for selected cancers; ii) to develop a conceptual model for combined cancer screening. iii) to examine the effect of cumulative smoking on cancer survival and stage at diagnosis. iv) to develop an R-based modelling package for evaluating multiple cancer screening interventions; and v) to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of combined cancer screening strategies.
