A Strategic Framework for Global Genomics Standards Adoption: The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (360G-Wellcome-336967_Z_25_Z)

Genomic and health data are growing rapidly, but fragmented systems, inconsistent approaches, and siloed infrastructures limit their impact on science and healthcare. Despite consensus on the need for responsible, interoperable data sharing, adoption remains uneven, leaving critical datasets underused and delaying patient benefit. The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) is the trusted international body for secure, ethical, and interoperable data-sharing standards. Over the past decade, GA4GH has delivered more than 40 widely adopted policy and technical products, including BAM, CRAM, VCF, Phenopackets, DUO, and Cloud APIs, now embedded in initiatives such as Genomics England, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service, and the European Genomic Data Infrastructure. This proposal by EMBL-EBI and the Wellcome Sanger Institute will advance GA4GH’s mission to turn global consensus into practice by delivering implementation support through Starter Kits, improved documentation, and a streamlined GitHub ecosystem; establishing metrics tracking with analytics, compliance tools, and dashboards; and sustaining community support through project management, technical coordination, and a diversified funding model. These activities will lower costs, enable secure global collaboration, and deliver faster diagnoses, improved treatments, and equitable research outcomes. This programme will create an interconnected genomics ecosystem that accelerates discovery and delivers measurable health benefits worldwide.
