The impact of rurality and deprivation on mental health problems, access to services and outcomes in young people (360G-Wellcome-341567_Z_25_Z)
Background: Mental health (MH) problems are common and can have lasting impacts on young people (YP). their families, as well as wider economic impacts for society. Despite its importance, there is an absence of systematic research investigating the MH needs of YP living in rural and deprived communities in the UK. Approach: This proposal uses a mixed-methods approach to develop our understanding of the impact of rurality and deprivation on the MH of YP. In addition to examining linked, multinational, administrative healthcare data (Study 1) and longitudinal cohort study data (study 2), this Fellowship also includes complementary quantitative and qualitative studies (Studies 3 and 4). This approach will enable us to triangulate findings and provide a clearer understanding of the epidemiology and causal pathways to MH problems, service use and outcomes in this substantially under-researched population. Expected impact: This research will answer important questions on the impact of rurality and deprivation on the MH of YP. Outputs will address significant evidence gaps and the findings and recommendations will help to identify areas for further research and improve service planning and targeting of resources.
