Multimorbidity in children and young people with intellectual disabilities (360G-Wellcome-341833_Z_25_Z)
People with intellectual disabilities experience earlier onset and higher prevalence of multimorbidity compared to the general population and their life expectancy is, on average, 20 years shorter. This project aims to investigate the accrual of multiple long-term conditions in children and young people with intellectual disabilities, and the impact of multimorbidity on health and education outcomes for this population. A systematic literature review of multimorbidity in children and young people with intellectual disabilities will be completed. Large, routinely collected, linked electronic health and education datasets will be used for subsequent objectives. Trajectory of accumulation of long-term conditions in children and young people with intellectual disabilities will be modelled. Hospitalisations and premature mortality will then be compared between children and young people with and without intellectual disabilities and with and without multimorbidity. The impact of multimorbidity on outcomes such as school attendance and post-school destination for children and young people with intellectual disabilities will also be investigated. These studies will help to understand how multimorbidity develops in children and young people with intellectual disabilities and how it affects their health and education / participation outcomes. This will help to identify priorities for targeted intervention and prevention.
