Arbovirus Vector Genomic Surveillance Platform (ArVGen): Building a platform to enable the genomic surveillance of arbovirus vectors at scale to address a major global health challenge (360G-Wellcome-344491_Z_26_Z)
The overarching goal of this proposal is to build a foundational arbovirus vector genomic data platform with an open, community driven, accessible, scalable and expandable resource of vector variation and associated detailed metadata. This resource will accelerate a technological step-change to enable the use of arbovirus vector genomic data for public health surveillance, including viral transmission, for the first time, and enable data-driven, pre- emptive, selection and targeting of precision public health interventions and outbreak prediction. The proposal has four key aims: Aim 1 - Bridge key technological and technical gaps that currently limit the generation of high- resolution and informative genomic data at scale for arbovirus vectors by establishing protocols for high throughput Aedes genomics. Aim 2 - Create a cloud data resource and cloud-native analytics platform to accelerate arbovirus vector surveillance and locally led data use. Aim 3 - Develop a gold standard methodology for detection of key arboviruses/within-strain variants in mosquitoes, and a module for hosting virus data alongside WGS variation data in the surveillance platform to enable disease transmission associations to be explored. Aim 4 - Generate a global baseline data resource for Aedes aegypti genomic surveillance, including ~5,000 novel WGS samples.
