Sustaining the BME Early Career Researcher Network: Connecting, Developing and Empowering Diverse Research Talent (360G-Wellcome-355548_Z_26_Z)

£666,156

The BME Early Career Researcher (ECR) Network exists to create a more equitable and inclusive research culture by supporting the progression, leadership and visibility of researchers from Black and minoritised ethnic backgrounds across the UK. Building on a decade of impact through its nationally recognised annual conference, the Network will provide year-round opportunities for mentoring, networking, leadership development and collaboration. Over the next five years, the Network will strengthen support for researchers at key career transition points, addressing persistent inequalities in academic progression and the underrepresentation of Black academics in senior leadership. It will expand access to mentoring, sponsorship and professional development, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and create opportunities for researchers to showcase their work and develop sustainable partnerships. Funding will enable the launch of a BME ECR bursary and travel fund to reduce financial barriers to participation, alongside a dedicated website and digital platform to connect members and share resources. The Network will also generate evidence of effective practice to inform institutional and sector-wide approaches to improving research culture. Through annual conferences and year-round activities, the Network will empower researchers, strengthen career progression, increase representation in research leadership, and contribute to a more diverse, innovative and inclusive UK research ecosystem.
