Supporting Health Expertise and Climate–Health Engagement at the 2026 Overshoot Conference (Beijing) (360G-Wellcome-356105_Z_26_Z)

The Overshoot Conference 2026, co-hosted by IIASA and Tsinghua University in Beijing (24–25 November 2026), will bring together an interdisciplinary, international community to examine the scientific and societal dimensions of climate overshoot, building on the inaugural 2025 conference at IIASA. This proposal requests support to strengthen the health dimension of the conference and Wellcome's engagement with it. First, funding of 40,000 EUR will support the attendance of a minimum of six key experts working on health or health- relevant overshoot topics prioritising those who might otherwise be unable to attend and helping ensure a diverse range of voices in the room. Invitations will be prioritised by IIASA and Wellcome. Second, the budget covers conference registration for approximately three members of Wellcome's Climate & Health team, who will follow the discussions, engage on the health side, and contribute to an internal Wellcome piece on future engagement in this space. Third, it includes modest planning and admin costs for a preparatory joint webinar on climate overshoot which will contain the key contents of he UNEP overshoot report (expected mid of September 2026) and an outlook to the contents of the conference aimed at health experts and Wellcome grantees, timed to follow the UNEP Report.
