Recipient Org: Company Number SC419662
Recipient Org: Description The organisation provides culturally sensitive support to women, children and young people primarily from the Asian Black and Minority Ethnic communities who have experienced domestic abuse in any form which can be physical, emotional, financial or sexual abuse; including forced marriage, honour based abuse and cultural oppression. We work in partnership with other organisations to ensure appropriate support is provided to all women, children and young people in order to meet their holistic needs. We aim to increase external agencies? understanding about domestic abuse in the Asian Black and Minority Ethnic communities and to improve the quality of support provided by external agencies to women, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse, forced marriage and honour based abuse through multi agency working. We do not discriminate in any area of our service provision on the grounds of age, disability, gender re-assignment or gender identity, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief. We provide safe temporary refuge accommodation to women, children and young people fleeing domestic abuse, honour based abuse and forced marriage. Emotional and practical support is provide based upon the individual needs of service users. We have 9 refuge spaces for women and their children. The refuge building contains 7 self contained flats and 2 shared spaces. There is a staff office in the building with a counselling room for the women to utilise. There is also a children's play flat with age appropriate equipment and resources. The building is protected by CCTV to allow us to ensure the safety of the women and the children which can be accessed remotely. We employ three housing support workers who work in the refuge during the day and we provide night cover in the refuge 5 days per week. This service enables the women to have a listening ear with the staff member working at night. The women are allocated a key worker for support and assistance during their stay in refuge. There are two children's workers who are based in refuge who provide direct support to children and young people and support the mothers to attend appointments, participate in social work meetings and advocate on behalf of the children and young people in refuge. They also organise a range of therapeutic activities, games and outings normally in consultation with the children and young people. We provide outreach/crisis support to women, children and young people living within the wider community. Outreach/crisis support services are available to women children and young people who have had experienced domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour based abuse or are currently living within an abusive environment. We often meet with the women at a mutually convenient safe place for the woman when she cannot attend at our drop in centre at 24 Willowbank Street which is the principal place of attendance for women fleeing abusive relationships. We employ dedicated bilingual support workers who provide support to women whose first language is not English. Children's workers also provide support to children and young people at a safe place and a substantial part of our workload involves placed based school support. We support children and young people with difficulties at home, cultural complexities, forced marriage and abuse and mistreatment that they too may experience. Women, children and young people receive support through our follow on service when leaving the refuge and moving to permanent accommodation. This ensures that women, children and young people have access to the resources to make the move to their new home and have access to support to settle into the new environment and also to prevent immediate isolation. The support continues for approximately six weeks but it is dependent upon the individual needs of the woman. We have a dedicated worker who is provides this specialist support. We work with a range of voluntary and statutory organisations to raise awareness of the specific needs of women, children and young people from Asian, Black and Minority Ethnic communities experiencing domestic abuse, forced marriage, honour based abuse and cultural oppression. Adopting a holistic and multi agency approach through early intervention working to meet the needs of service users ensures a positive outcome. We provide training and awareness on a range of issues affecting minority ethnic women including: forced marriage and honour based abuse, no recourse to public funds; barriers experienced by minority ethnic women fleeing abusive relationships and intersectionality and access to justice. During September 2019 and January 2020 we completed forced marriage training throughout Scotland with sister organisation Shakti Womens Aid and Scottish Womens Aid.
