Recipient Org: Description Caithness and Sutherland Women's Aid (CASWA) is a charitable organisation run by women, for women, children and young people in Caithness and Sutherland. It became a Company Limited by Guarantee in 2007. CASWA believes that equality for all is a basic human right and recognises its legal obligations under the Equality Act 2010 in relation to protected characteristics. It operates within the North Highland regions of Caithness and Sutherland. The primary service that CASWA provides is as a support function to women, children and young people within Caithness and Sutherland, who are experiencing/ have experienced domestic abuse. We adopt a definition of domestic abuse which is akin to the definition outlined by the Scottish Government: "Domestic abuse (as gender-based abuse), can be perpetrated by partners or ex-partners and can include physical abuse (assault and physical attack involving a range of behaviour), sexual abuse (acts which degrade and humiliate women and are perpetrated against their will, including rape) and mental and emotional abuse (such as threats, verbal abuse, racial abuse, withholding money and other types of controlling behaviour such as isolation from family or friends)." Scottish Government. Operating within the communities of Caithness and Sutherland, our key purpose is to provide women, children and young people with effective emotional and practical support, information, advice and advocacy which meets their needs and which is delivered by a skilled and knowledgeable workforce. CASWA is the only organisation within this vast geographical area of approximately 3012 square miles which provides this type of specialised support service to women, children and young people. Referrals are made to CASWA from partner agencies; statutory (Social Services, Police, NHS, Housing etc.); third sector and voluntary organisations and we also receive a substantial number of self-referrals. CASWA's support service has two strands: the Women's Service and the Children and Young People's Service. The support that CASWA provides as an organisation is voluntary in nature, adopts a person-centred, person-led, empowering and empathic approach. Individuals who choose to access the service as a service user are allocated an individual key-worker and develop and design their own plan for support. Consequently support is individually tailored to meet the unique needs of each service user accessing the service. Support work is delivered through a means which best suits the service user and their circumstances: weekly/fortnightly/monthly/drop-in support on face-to-face/telephone/e-mail/text/group basis. Specialist emotional and practical support, as well as information provision and advocacy are provided through the following activities: ? Women?s Support: o 1 to 1 o Support Planning o Activities and Visits o Group Support; ? Children and Young People?s Service: o 1 to 1 o Support Planning o Activities and Visits o Group Support; ? Raising Awareness: o Of Domestic Abuse, Gender Based Violence and healthy relationships o Of our organisation, removing barriers to access. CASWA is a professional, confidential and non-judgmental service. The overall purpose of support is to enable women, children and young people to understand, recover and move on from their experience. CASWA aims to support service users to feel safer, feel less isolated, be listened to and respected, have greater knowledge and understanding of domestic abuse and violence against women issues and have access to information and advice through which they are empowered to make informed decisions and choices.
