Recipient Org: Description Care for Carers is a charity that has worked with carers for over 30 years. Our services are open to carers of all ages, across all caring situations, from all over Scotland. We specialise in providing residential breaks and short breaks for carers at breaking point. Our services evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to meet the needs of the carers we support. At the start of the first lockdown, we handed out over 12,000 items of PPE, including masks, gloves and bottles of hand sanitiser. We also provided 200 carers? emergency cards and provided IT equipment, including laptops and tablets, for 105 carers, many of whom have never owned a computer before. We now deliver a hybrid model which incorporates both in-person and online support. Our activities over the past year have included: ? Launched in April 2020, we have developed a programme of short breaks, day and evening break activities and events online. Over 805 carers have taken part in online events since then, participating in activities ranging from yoga, to boxing and mindfulness, to vegetarian cooking demonstrations, to astronomy. We have built relationships with new providers who offer their expertise in delivering these sessions. ? The need for one-to-one, emotional support increased dramatically. We took over 2,000 calls from carers, with staff providing ongoing one-to-one telephone support. The nature of the support needed became more complicated, with carers struggling with loss of loved ones, financial distress, family and personal breakdowns and poor mental health. Carers need support for longer periods of time. We continue to see a higher number of carers whose own mental health is very poor. ? Over £10,000 secured from Carers Trusts grants, helping carers buy household items and exercise equipment, as well as paying for socially distanced respite breaks. ? We increased the production of our Carers Newsletters; prior to the outbreak of the pandemic we produced 6,000 newsletters per annum, by the end of April 2021 we had produced over 24,000. We published these fortnightly to try to keep up with the pace of change and the newsletters became the go-to place, to find out about offers of support, service news as well as local and national information. In July 2021 we resumed our Stepping Out® residential short breaks programme. 84 carers had a short break with us between July ? November 2021, and we currently have a waiting list going into next year. After 18 months of not even having a day off, many carers have been overwhelmed, relieved and happy to finally mix with other people, make new friends and take a break. We have supported a number of carers to take up Respitality offers, this enables carers to get free accommodation with the person they care for. We are also members of Carefree breaks and these hotel breaks have resumed in October 2021 to allow carers to take breaks on their own or together with a friend.
