Recipient Org: Description Amma supports women at a critical time. We believe that nobody should face birth and parenthood alone. We work with asylum seekers and other marginalised individuals who face inequities and barriers to accessing the perinatal care, information and support they need. Our approach is trauma-informed, inclusive, multi-lingual and culturally sensitive. We aim to empower our clients to have a positive birth experience, increase their wellbeing, build a support network, build links to their community, gain confidence as a parent, and build solid foundations for the future. Since our inception in 2019, we have served more than 250 women during pregnancy, at the births of their babies and through the early postnatal period. We believe that everyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability/ability, or socio-economic circumstances should be supported at every stage of their parenting journey. Our mission is to ensure all people feel seen, heard and empowered throughout pregnancy, birth and early parenthood. Our vision is to provide a safe, equitable and holistic model of reproductive care that centres the voices and experiences of marginalised and minoritised groups. Amma?s core activities include: Birth and postnatal companionship: On initial referral, clients are assigned a Perinatal Team Leader (Amma staff) and a small team of volunteer companions. They work flexibly as a team to provide continuous trauma-informed, culturally appropriate, practical and emotional support to each client from the third trimester, through birth and into the early postnatal weeks. Our volunteers undergo more than 50 hours of training to ensure that they can provide the right care to our clients. Peer support: Our rapidly growing Amma Family programme supports our clients (and their babies) to develop friendships, increase confidence, learn parenting skills and have fun. Our Peer Support programme takes a community development approach and is managed and run by three Amma staff, with additional support from a small group of peer support volunteers, all of whom have lived experience of our service. The main elements of the programme are a user-led drop-in mother and baby group (including an infant feeding support group led by experienced feeding counsellors, day trips and social events, classes and workshops, yoga and fitness classes and gardening club. Antenatal education: Our group antenatal course provides a comprehensive and holistic understanding of how to prepare for birth and life with a new baby. The course content is tailored to the individual needs of our client group and is delivered by a midwife and a doula/hypnobirthing instructor, both of whom have been through Amma?s extensive volunteer training. The course is designed to be inclusive, trauma-informed and accessible to all. Interpreters, childcare, travel expenses and food/drink are provided as needed. Our birth/postnatal companions can also provide tailored birth and/or postnatal preparation sessions in our clients? homes. The content of these sessions is participant-led and based on the expressed learning needs of each client.
