The Gatehouse Project at Pontefract Castle has been commissioned because in 2016, during conservation works, a previously unknown and unrecorded gateway feature, including a drawbridge pit, was uncovered. This project is intended to assess and excavate the surviving features and their relationship to the existing castle.The objective of the project is to fully record, analyse and report all archaeological remains within the area of interest (preservation by record); to publish the results in an appropriate format as agreed by Historic England; and to inform how the Gatehouse might be presented to the public.
