The Basic Payment Scheme makes payments to eligible farmers based on the amount of land being used for agricultural production and the equivalent number of payment entitlements held. The main payments are made at a flat rate per hectare of land / entitlement. Additional payments are made for meeting Greening requirements (Agricultural Practices Beneficial for the Climate and the Environment) and to Young Farmers (under 40 years of age). The Greening requirements vary depending on circumstances, but all farmers must also meet Cross Compliance requirements. These rules enforce laws around animal and plant health and sustainable agricultural practices. The scheme supports income in the agricultural sector, encourages younger people to take up farming and delivers environmental benefits and controls.
