The 20 women interviewed for NIACROs Griffins Research spoke of feeling low self-worth and self-confidence because of domestic abuse sustained, often over many years, by one or multiple partners. This was often layered over early adverse experiences including sexual and physical abuse, neglect and growing up with violence. Women believed the lie that they were worthless. This led many to experience mental health difficulties and addictions originating in self-medicating to deal with trauma. Through skilful facilitation, women will be supported to recognise (perhaps for the first time) the skills, personal resolve, resilience and character with which they faced adversity and to recognise the lies that lie behind their shame, guilt or low self-worth. As NIACRO has done in the past, we will encourage participating women to find further opportunities to build on their experience of Speak Out! and to consolidate the skills they have discovered and confidence gained. In particular, we encourage and support women to make lasting connections with local supports; womens centres, training organisations and social groups in their local communities. The expected outcomes for participants are therefore: - The production of the book and the sense of achievement gained from doing so. - The honest sharing of their stories where, in the past, fear and shame fostered secrecy and isolation. - Associated growth in confidence and appreciation of self-worth. - New friendships and connections for women who often live in isolation and fear - Confidence to build and access supportive networks within their communities - For participants still in abusive relationships, we hope that Speak Out! and associated support one-to-one support through NIACROs Womens Group will give women the confidence needed to seek professional help to live lives free of abuse.
