Accommodation for young care leavers (360G-landaid-20181910)

£14,000

This project is aimed to help support young people aged 16 - 18 coming out of the care system. It is situated close by to existing children's homes, all within walking distance. The building is an existing empty property that we have a long term lease on from the Worshipful Company of Girdlers. There are no planning constraints as it is already classed as social housing. The aim is to provide the young people with independence but with the knowledge they can always pop home - for a meal, a chat, support. The project will overcome the cliff edge that these young people often face once they leave care. So support will be on-going, they have friendly faces to celebrate successes with and they will know that someone still cares. Our Skills for Life team will help them develop the skills they need for independent living.

Recipient Org: Description St Christopher’s Fellowship provides services for children and young people. We provide fostering, residential and support services where children and young people can feel safe and cared for. We were set up in 1870. Our approach is to ensure children and young people at St Christopher’s can be safe, loved, happy and achieve. We want them to succeed and realise their dreams. Last year we worked with 983 children and young people in the UK. We specialise in: Working with girls affected by child sexual exploitation.Supporting children who run away from care or are on a local authority's risk register and working with unaccompanied asylum seeking children. We lead the sector in adopting a social pedagogic approach to work with young people. We are developing a 'Staying Close' model helping care leavers in their transition to adulthood that LandAid kindly supported last year.
