The FL/ASH Project: Opening up the Ashmolean Museum to Children with Learning Disabilities (360G-ocf-a061600000k0Hnk)

The grant would fund a series of intensive workshops for young people with complex learning disabilities at the Ashmolean Museum over the course of one year. Each workshop would take place initially in the Education Centre, then the Galleries, following specific themes (Japanese prints or the Mediterranean, for example). It would also enable Flash of Splendour to provide inset training days for museum staff, museum and student volunteers and to produce the first ever Ashmolean guide for young SEND visitors, their families, carers and educators, which would be available as a printed pamphlet in the museum and online as a pdf.

Recipient Org: Description Flash of Splendour works to empower disabled children and young people across Oxfordshire through the creative arts. Using innovative methodology, we enable children to enjoy and interpret art, ideas and literature which would normally be closed to them through complexity or inaccessibility. Since our foundation in 2009, Flash of Splendour has had a hugely positive impact on hundreds of Oxfordshire children and young people with SEND, their families, carers and teachers. We have shown that no subject is too inaccessible and that every single child's voice and creativity is vital to the community. We have transformed attitudes within academia regarding the possibilities of outreach education, with our launch exhibition at St Anne's College, "We Were There, Now We're Here," in 2010, for example, representing the first time young people with disabilities have had a dedicated showcase of their art work within Oxford University. We work with multiple partners, including Exeter University, Bodleian Library and Aardman Studios. Our last project, the Children’s Poly-Olbion, described by the Heritage Lottery as ‘one of the finest inclusive heritage projects in the UK,’ juxtaposed children’s work with 17th maps at a major exhibition at the Royal Geographical Society.
