This is a medical research project which aims to recommend effective treatment to reduce heroin use, leading to a reduction in crime and psychosocial dysfunction. The study examines the efficacy of treatment with injectable opiates (methadone, heroin) for the management of heroin dependence in clients not responding to conventional substitution treatment. The project will further the evidence base informing policy, clinical practice and guideline development regarding the role of injectable opiates.
