There is emphasis of the importance of social interaction and activity in old age and that social exclusion is detrimental to physical and mental health. However there is lack of research on characteristics of different communities, such as former industrial communities. This research aims to determine how, the extent of and indicators of social exclusion amongst older people in former industrial areas and whether this differs from social exclusion amongst older people in other areas.
