Recipient Org: Description | We provide grassroots support for older people (50+) to help maintain health, wellbeing and independence. We do this for those living in their own homes in Kincardine and Mearns - but families, carers and the wider community also benefit. We aim to: 1) Support & maintain health and wellbeing 2) Empower & enable independence 3) Tackle isolations such as a) social/situational b) geographical c) technological/digital Our community-based activities, services and groups promote social engagement and both support and assist/enable individuals with the practical issues of day-to-day life whilst promoting inclusion and reducing loneliness and isolation SERVICES: Transport Service - heavily subsidised service allowing older people to get to healthcare appointments and social activities that support wellbeing Shopping Service - volunteers provide a heavily subsidised shop & deliver service for older people - actively encouraging accompaniment where the older person is able. Garden Maintenance - gardeners help with/carry-out gardening tasks. There is a charge for this service. Friendly Call Telephone Service - volunteers call on a weekly basis helping older people, many of whom are living alone, feel less isolated and more supported. GROUPS & ACTIVITIES Social Gardening Groups (Laurencekirk & Portlethen) - Spring/Summer: members enjoy light gardening activities. Autumn/Winter: members enjoy talks from garden, countryside and wildlife experts & crafting of bird feeders, wreaths, nest boxes etc. Health Walks (St Cyrus, Laurencekirk and Portlethen) - run by volunteer leaders, low level walks provide valuable exercise, social contact and a sense of wellbeing and belonging Past Times Group (Laurencekirk) - this free weekly social group is for people living with mild cognitive impairment and dementia and features talks, games, music, quizzes as well as crafts and outings to venues in Aberdeenshire and Angus Memory Cafe (Laurencekirk) - a free monthly event for people with dementia and their families, friends and carers. As well as offering support, the group often feature events, games, music, crafts as well as practical support from visiting organisations such as Citizens Advice & Alzheimer Scotland Lunch Club (Stonehaven) - currently suspended whilst a new venue is sourced, this weekly event enables older people to get together and enjoy a sociable hot meal Gentle Exercise Classes (Stonehaven) - twice a week, these classes offer older people sociability whilst helping maintain fitness and flexibility. Sunshine Cafe (Laurencekirk) - in partnership with Community Learning & Development colleagues, this fortnightly cafe group meets with member-suggested activities including arts & crafts, poetry writing, book clubs, tea tasting & blending etc. etc. Connecting Scotland Project - aiming to remove digital exclusion, volunteers provide 1:1 support enabling older people to feel more comfortable (and connected) in the use of digital devices such as iPads and Chromebooks. Volunteering - We couldn't do what we do without the fantastic support of our volunteers. Volunteering helps promote social inclusion, a sense of belonging, strengthens community bonds and is proven to promote a sense of wellbeing. |
