Recipient Org: Charity Number SC024140
Recipient Org: Description The purpose and objects of the Band as a whole is to advance the education of the general public in the art of playing brass instruments by the presentation of public performances and other activities. To foster and encourage the playing and appreciation of brass music in the community, and to provide an opportunity for players of brass instruments to play together for recreation, entertainment and competition. To purchase musical instruments and all other equipment necessary to provide facilities for young and old to learn to play brass band instruments. We raise money by charging a fee or having a collection for our performances (there are exceptions) and we also hold extra fundraisers on a regular basis having raffles, baking stall and concerts. Creetown Initiative opened a charity shop within the old Barholm Arms and volunteers from the band man the shop on a rota with all the other participating local organisations, and receive a share of the proceeds. We also enter competitions and have recently won the North West Castle Trophy at the Wigtownshire Music Festival. The band has previously competed in the Scottish Brass Band Championship, but have unable to take part in recent years due to lack of key players. Since we resumed rehearsals after Covid the band has seen a steady rise in player numbers which is very encouraging. The purpose of the learners? section is twofold: firstly to produce future players for the senior band and secondly to provide juniors with musical knowledge and skills which will give them an enjoyable hobby or career in the future. Not all of the juniors will move on to the senior band but will still benefit from their time at the class. Adults are also taught and several are now regular and important members of the band. It?s hopeful that time may be found to hold an adult only class. Including adults there are now 20 in the junior and learner section of which the more advanced also play in the senior band. As instruments and music are supplied free of charge (a small membership fee is payable) there is always a need for funds to purchase and repair instruments as well as to purchase new music and uniforms. The junior members are encouraged to take part in music festivals and competitions such as the Galloway Music festival and the South West of Scotland solo and ensemble contest which is a qualifying event for the Scottish finals. This involves travel and entry fees. Plans are in hand to travel further afield to similar events and to hold a concert especially for this group. We see this work as vital to the existence of the band as well as a valuable resource to the area. Senior members of the band give of their time to carry out this tuition with no remuneration. Any financial assistance to aid this work is most welcome.
