Recipient Org: Description The purpose of the Applecross Community Company (ACC) is that the community of the remote Applecross peninsula is sustainable, resilient and prosperous. Since it was established in 2008, ACC has successfully delivered a range of projects and services in three Strategic Areas: 1) AFFORDABLE HOUSING: working to acquire and develop land and buildings to help address the local affordable housing shortfall. Projects and services include: (a) Developing a Community Land Use Plan and assessing the feasibility of three sites with potential for housing offered for sale by the Applecross Trust. (b) Acquiring the 2.3ha ?hydro-field? site from the Trust to repurpose it into community-owned affordable housing and business units powered by renewable energy from AppleJuice community-owned hydro scheme. This development is the subject of this funding application. (c) Acquiring a 0.08ha site from NHS Highland and constructing three all-access affordable homes (the An Toll Ban development) tenanted in March 2022. 2) LOCAL ECONOMY: developing and enabling economic and (small) business opportunities for residents that harness local resources and capitalise on skills within the community. Projects and services include: (a) Managing the Filling Station, providing fuel to residents, businesses and tourists. (b) Developing the community-owned hydro-power project, AppleJuice. (c) Pioneering, managing and maintaining AppleNet, one of the first community owned broadband networks in Scotland, delivering life-line services to 151 households and businesses on the peninsula and beyond. (d) Managing and maintaining the Applecross public conveniences. (e) Acquiring a Church of Scotland Church and converting it into a Community Hub that will provide office and hot-desk space for residents, a Library of Things, residential accommodation, workshops and studio space, and an office for ACC. 3) COMMUNITY AND WELL-BEING: providing community services and facilities to ensure that the peninsula remains a sustainable place to live, work and play. Projects and services include: a) Establishing Appleseed Community Garden and Allotments, encouraging local food production, reducing carbon emissions and providing social, health and well-being activities. b) Leasing e-bikes to residents, improving the community?s confidence and active travel and prompting residents to buy their own e-bikes. c) Acquiring a 14.5ha Coille a? Thorra Ghairbh (Torgarve) community woodland and restoring a mature Sitka Spruce plantation to an Atlantic rainforest, with natural and cultural heritage benefits for the community, tourists and beyond. d) Delivering a Covid-19 Community Support Project with the Applecross Healthcare Association which provided a range of support including food boxes, delivery services, and IT equipment and support to those in social isolation. ACC is a registered Scottish charity (SC042865), a company limited by guarantee (SC342825) and its values are to be inclusive, accountable and approachable. ACC is a fair work employer and procures good and services from local providers and contractors, whenever possible. In November 2023, the organisation was awarded a Rural Community Business Award for its work on innovation in the environment, illustrating its commitment to the local environment and Scotland?s net zero targets.
