Specialist EU Settlement Scheme advice ? Financial education, including income maximisation, debt and benefit entitlement Advice ? Welfare Rights assistance (including representation at Tribunal level) ? Befriending support to assist with those vulnerable and isolated individuals ? Gambling Support ? Energy Advice & Assistance Airdrie CAB works to reach the most disadvantaged and vulnerable within our community; actively seeking to address areas of injustice through research and social policy work and thereafter reporting on this locally, regionally and nationally. We work in partnership with many private, public and voluntary organisations, striving to ensure our clients are empowered with knowledge of their rights and have the support required to assert these effectively. In September 2015, Airdrie CAB established the Lanarkshire Community Law Centre (LCLC) which is the first of its kind in Scotland. Following a feasibility study which identified a gap in the availability of legal representation in the areas of homelessness, mortgage repossession, tenancy repossession and related debt matters. In order to comply with Law Society of Scotland regulations, the LCLC is a legal firm under the management and directorship of the Principal Solicitor, who is in turn employed by Airdrie CAB. The LCLC is funded by the Scottish Legal Aid Board to provide this support however, is also registered to provide Civil Legal Aid on non-housing related matters. The Project Solicitor represents clients in court and tribunal proceedings, whilst specialist advisers within Airdrie CAB are available to provide assistance with the associated issues such as debt or income maximisation. This unique service is the only consistent defender-centric service in North Lanarkshire and is exceptionally sensitive to individuals? circumstances. Dedicated solicitors and advisers assisting clients to successfully implement action plans, negotiate with lenders, landlords and creditors ensuring support is readily accessible, thus achieving justice for particularly marginalised and vulnerable communities. In 2020/21 Airdrie CAB dealt with 32,910 issues generated by 10,342 contacts. These figures show a 18.4% increase in issues from the previous year and a 21.6% increase in contacts. Benefits, Debt, Legal Proceedings, Finance & Charitable Support, and Utilities & Communications were the five highest areas of concern to our clients. In the relevant period, we secured almost £2.3millon in client financial gains. This is a marked increase during a period of immense uncertainty, and an indicator of our much needed service. Still, you cannot measure our success solely in terms of financial gain. Our clients can have their lives transformed with our help, with many reporting improved health and confidence. Protecting the wellbeing of individuals and saving both the emotional cost of dealing with a crisis and expense to the public purse cannot be stressed enough.
