Recipient Org: Description | Movember is an independent, global charity with a vision to have an everlasting impact on the face of men?s health. Our focus is on the biggest issues affecting our fathers, partners, brothers, sons and friends: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Our goal is simple: help men live happier, healthier, longer lives. And in the process, as we shake up and rewrite the conversation around men?s health, help prepare today?s generation of boys to be the next generation of men - happy, healthy and hopeful. We know that on average across the world men die six years earlier than women. Men are significantly impacted by poor mental health; this is evidenced by the high rates of suicide amongst men - three out of every four suicides. The World Health Organisation estimates that 510,000 men die from suicide globally each year, which equates to one every minute every day. The impact of prostate and testicular cancer on the lives of boys and men is substantial. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide and is the 5th leading cause of cancer death among men. For men and boys aged between 15 and 40, testicular cancer is the most common cancer for all countries with the exception of Australia. From humble beginnings, Movember has grown into a truly global movement, inspiring support from over 6 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters around the world. Movember started as a mobilisation of men in 2003. It was a bold idea, a bit of fun, a few blokes coming together to have a laugh. What started as a chat about long-forgotten fashion trends turned into a friendly challenge: could a stubbly rabble of mates bring moustaches back into fashion? Thirty friends threw their top lips in the ring, and, well, the rest is history. The spirit of Movember captivated men around the world and the campaign grew organically, in countries such as New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Ireland, Canada and mainland Europe. Movember achieves its organisational goals through both undertaking and strategically investing in research and programmes. Movember?s major funded programmes address critical challenges in men?s health and wellbeing alongside their treatment and care. Since 2003, we have supported over 1,250 men?s health projects directly and via our men?s health partners. Our funding seeks to challenge the status quo, shake up research, and transform how health projects and services reach and support men. Fast forward to 2021: Movember has raised over £650m for men?s health globally, we are operational in 21 countries and are supported by a community of over 6m Mo Bros and Mo Sistas. We know what works for men, and what doesn?t. Movember's success can be attributed largely to the strength of our global community ? scattered across the globe, but united by our mission to stop men dying too young. |
