Recipient Org: Description | Mid Argyll Youth Development Services (MAYDS) works with children and young people 0 to 26 years old, providing a range of recreational, educational and tailor-made support services. While our central base is in the town of Lochgilphead in Mid Argyll, our work takes us to all the villages and outlying areas of Mid Argyll, Kintyre and Islay (MAKI). Living rurally the children and young people of MAKI face many disadvantages and inequalities due to issues such as limited public transport, cost of travelling to mainland, lack of further training and employment opportunities, isolation and access to support services such as counselling etc. MAYDS works hard to break down those barriers by offering a full-time robust program of activities, projects, training, educational and support services. Along with running diversionary activities we also provide support for the more marginalised and harder to reach groups such as Young Carers, children with Additional Support Needs, Vulnerable Families, those without Positive Destinations, those suffering poor mental health etc. We can have up to 250 individual young people a week accessing any of our programs or services and estimate we work with around 1000 individuals per year. Through our programs and services, we can help make small or big changes in people?s lives, whether that is offering them a safe space to access activities and build up friendships to entering supported employment and apprenticeships, increasing and improving mental wellbeing and resilience, offering respite etc. While we have several contracts via the local authority for certain services, we still find that core costs are rising and are looking for funding to support those ongoing sometimes hidden costs that are vital in allowing us to continue to run the much-needed service we provide across a very large rural area. |
