Recipient Org: Description The Japanese Garden, Cowden is a charity, set up with the purpose of restoring a historic Garden and of promoting access to and participation in the arts. Today, as the restoration nears completion its core operation is as a visitor attraction welcoming people all year round to enjoy the unique sense of tranquillity and peacefulness that the garden can provide. Since 2020 the garden has also been growing a learning programme which aims to reach out to the local community. With this programme we aim to utilise the unique qualities of the garden, its history and stories and to develop opportunities for people of all ages to learn, develop and benefit from a connection to the arts and our natural environment. The Garden itself has a history dating back to 1908 when the trail blazing traveller and owner of the Cowden estate, Ella Christie, ventured to Japan only to fall in love with the gardens she saw, vowing to build her own back on her estate in Scotland. After a unique partnership with Japanese landscape architect Taki Handa, Sha Raku En was created and continued to flourish during Ella?s lifetime. Sadly in 1963 the garden was badly vandalised and it wasn?t until 2014 that the charity was created to revive Ella and Taki Handa?s legacy and restore the garden to its former glory. Today that restoration is nearly completed and visitors can now enjoy its beauty and charm, it can also be developed as a real social, educational and economic asset to its local community aswell.
