Recipient Org: Charity Number SC048128
Recipient Org: Description The core aim of Cycling Without Age Scotland (CWAS) is to enhance and enrich lives by giving disabled people and people with mobility challenges, especially the elderly, access to the beautiful outdoors through providing rides in our pioneering battery-assisted Trishaws or Wheelchair Transporters. Access to the outdoors is an experience which is denied to so many people simply because of age or limited mobility. And it is not just the passengers whose lives are enriched: CWAS volunteers are trained to ride specially designed Trishaws (three-wheeled bikes with two passenger seats in front) so that they can enjoy taking out rides and being part of an initiative that brings so much pleasure and life-enhancement to others. At the same time, the volunteers are themselves benefitting from the social interaction and the rewarding fulfilment they get from the elation and enjoyment they are creating for others. The physical benefits that the volunteers get from being active in this activity and the benefits to their mental health from the fulfilment they feel are both profound and undeniable. Many of our passengers simply would not be able to get outside at all, if it were not for the service that CWAS provides. That restriction is, of course, hugely damaging to an individual?s mental health, as the Covid pandemic demonstrated so starkly. Limited mobility is rarely something that happens overnight but even gradual limitations to people?s ability to get out and about are life changing and life limiting. Cycling Without Age Scotland?s rides are currently always free of charge and bespoke to every passenger. In ensuring that passengers are comfortable and, above all, safe, the volunteer riders (?Pilots?) respond to the specific needs of each individual. CWAS maintains the highest and most robust standards of safety in all our operations and is fully compliant with the requirements of the Scottish Care Inspectorate. Ours is not only a project which enables people to get outdoors; it is also a befriending service. The volunteers get to know the passengers. Bonds, friendships and relationships, which are often a lifeline to both volunteers and passengers, are built. In addition, volunteers and passengers often get to visit places in their area which are new and exciting for them. They connect with the people they meet on their rides which provides social interaction and makes them feel a part of their community. For the elderly, this can be even more enriching an experience, as they will often meet old friends whom they haven?t seen for a long while and visit places which re-kindle happy memories from their days gone by. In most of CWAS? Chapters (branches) the volunteers either take passengers out directly from their care home or other care facility, or from their own home. But this is often not possible. Some Care facilities and many of our passengers live in areas that our Trishaws can?t reach due to road infrastructure or safety concerns. Basically, we just can?t get to them and they miss out. Trishaws based in easily accessed iconic places, like the Helix, will help significantly to overcome that by providing exhilarating rides around beautiful and often spectacular sites, ensuring unforgettable, uplifting and morale-boosting experiences for everyone. Cycling Without Age Scotland is already present in almost every part of Scotland. We are currently provided with core funding from the Scottish Government to run our organisation to support communities across Scotland who want to make the project happen in their area, but we are not funded for specific projects. Cycling Without Age Scotland?s ?Trishaws in Iconic Places - Helix? is a specific project for which we have identified a clear need and which will enrich the lives of potentially thousands of people who are facing challenges that, fortunately, most of us don?t. We hope that the Falkirk 2008 Schools Charity can help to deliver this life-changing project.
