Recipient Org: Description Cobhair Bharraigh SCIO offers direct service to people resident on the islands of Barra and Vatersay. It supports particularly those who are vulnerable or who may experience isolation, whether this is due to living alone, exclusion, fragility, long term ill-health or mental, physical or sensory disabilities. Originally targeting those living with Dementia, the client range have expanded considerably over recent years, partly because of a growing gap in local care provision and partly as the multi-faceted benefits of the service provision became evident to the community. We aim to enhance the quality of life for all service users, helping sustain essential life skills, promoting mental and physical health and stimulating community participation. The service is delivered through the provision of day-care services in a purpose built, community owned facility which is open four days a week. Service users spend time with a peer group, outwith the confines of their own homes, in a safe and caring environment, we provide a hot, two course meal and this may be the only home cooked dinner that service users receive in the week, along with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities. To allow service users to access day care we provide an escorted transport service which accommodates the differing mobility levels of service users and without this service (we work with Community Bus to allow us to do this) many service users would remain isolated and lonely leading to other issues in their lives and the lives of their families and friends. WE have an open referral policy so that anyone, statutory bodies such as GP, Community Nursing team etc, or family and friends who have concerns can speak to us. We also have a home support programme to allow those who can't engaged to feel less isolated within the community. The organisation also recognises the crucial role of care givers who are supporting such vulnerable individuals. Practical support, advice and information is available, through Cobhair staff or through facilitated contact with relevant professionals or agencies. A support network has been developed for caregivers, who may begin to feel overwhelmed by their caring duties so begin to exclude themselves from community life. We have regular get-togethers to share experiences, worries or concerns and we try to give them the tools to build confidence. Crucially they also benefit from time-out from their day-to-day caring responsibilities, which can be critical in preserving their own quality of life and mental well-being and developing their resilience.
