Recipient Org: Description | We were founded by carers in 1990, and our volunteer befriending projects improve the quality of life of socially excluded children (aged 8+), young people and adults with learning disabilities in the Scottish Borders. They overcome social barriers and inequality of opportunity and give respite to family carers. Our service has developed through co-production with families and members. It takes the most direct route possible to improve social inclusion and is unique in the UK for its variety and size: We have 315 members of whom 265 are currently supported by 220 peer-age volunteers in 41 befriending groups and 45 traditional 1:1 links. Groups meet in community venues, in-school and on Zoom, and activities are similar to mainstream groups, including arts & crafts, drama, lifeskills, journalism, gardening, music, cookery, keep fit, games and overnight trips. 305 family carers benefit from regular respite. In our June 2024 Impact Report survey, 96% of members surveyed reported benefits in all 6 of the outcomes we measure (more friends & opportunities and improved happiness, confidence, self-esteem and social skills). All family carers surveyed reported a positive impact on their lives, with a more easily sustained role and/or greater wellbeing. Our support is longterm and sustained throughout transitions and provides excellent preparation for independent living, volunteering and employment. |
