Recipient Org: Charity Number SC047034
Recipient Org: Description The Warblers run regular singing for lung health sessions for people with chronic lung conditions and who experience breathlessness in East Lothian and Midlothian. The overall aims of the organisation are to reduce social isolation, to improve the physical and emotional health of people with chronic lung conditions, develop their capacity to manage their condition and prevent exacerbations and hospital admissions, enable people to learn new skills, to develop friendships and community connections, to reduce anxiety and isolation and to have fun. The Warblers engage experienced singing leaders who have completed evidence-based training in singing for lung heath to run the singing sessions. Through breathing and singing exercises and carefully chosen songs, participants are taught to develop greater awareness of postural and breathing patterns, develop healthier breathing habits, extend the exhale through sung phrases, learn to sing with support of the whole body and to build stamina. Most of our participants are older people adversely affected by their lung condition, and many experience poor mental health and social isolation. Most were shielding during the pandemic and, since then, have begun to develop confidence to re-engage in community activities - we offer a gentle, supportive and person-centred approach to help re-build confidence. Sessions are also offered via Zoom for those who may be unable to engage in person. The Warblers also undertake outreach work including presentations and taster sessions to inform health and social care professionals and respiratory patients about the groups and the benefits of singing for lung health.
