Recipient Org: Description The stated Aim of KDRA is: To preserve and develop the Keith and Dufftown Railway as a safe, sustainable and growing tourist attraction in the top quartile for Moray Speyside and as a major destination for visitors to Scotland. The Vision of KDRA is: A vibrant and sustainable heritage railway attraction with a strong regional and growing national and international recognition as ?The Whisky Line?. The Mission of KDRA is: To achieve the Vision through the delivery of a portfolio of development projects working towards a Value Proposition that uses a development path towards heritage steam. The railway was officially opened on 8th July 2000 and trains later operated between Dufftown and Drummuir. In the 2001 season services were extended through to Keith. Since that time until the present, the railway has operated services with Heritage Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) with volunteers undertaking operational, administrative, engineering and permanent way duties. The railway is a major visitor attraction in Moray and operates seasonally normally from Easter to end September up to 3 days a week, with later openings for the Ghost Train at Halloween, the Santa Specials prior to Christmas and for the first time this winter, a Hogmanay train and a Burns' night train. Through the season the railway run Special Event Days including family-friendly events such as the Easter Bunny and Teddy Bear Specials. Other important events include the famous 1940s weekend, Pie and Pint and Fish and Chip Specials. The railway supports the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival with special trains including whisky tasting and also the annual Dufftown Highland Games by running extra services from Keith to help bring in more visitors. Important achievements to date include: ? Maintaining the permanent way for the longest heritage railway in Scotland ? Building the award-wining replica of Keith Town Station ? Building the Engine Shed at Dufftown ? Achieving and maintaining 4* Visitor Attraction recognition ? Growing national and international charters and group bookings ? Delivering a growing portfolio of family-friendly and other events ? Fostering understanding of railways as part of our heritage in our Schools Education Programme ? Engaging the Local Community, Visitors and Railway enthusiasts with the ?friendly railway? ? Launch of the Dram Tram, winner of the Heritage Railway Association award for Innovation in Business and Customer Experience for 2024 The railway provides opportunities for training and the development of skills in engineering, carriage refurbishment, permanent way maintenance and construction, customer service including visitor interpretation, operating crews, retail, gardening and building maintenance.
